The Primary Setting

Our main story begins at the turn of the year, on January 1st, 2025, in London, England. This region was chosen for its rich and storied history, spanning centuries, and its role as a central hub for the rise of secret societies. London has long been a world power and serves as a gateway to the deep historical roots of Europe.

England is home to many longstanding aristocratic families, often referred to as "old blood" or "old money," whose generational wealth and influence have shaped the city-families that may or may not include Vampyre clans, Daemons, or Covens. London's multicultural environment further enhances its appeal, acting as a melting pot where connections from across the globe converge. This setting allows for characters of any background to seamlessly integrate into the environment without being forced.

Ultimately, the site is origonal character-driven. While there are canon organizations and endless possibilities to explore, it is optional to explore them. However, these organizations provide background information that your character must acknowledge, for better or worse, to maintain balance within the AU. That said, your character can still buck against the system; the rule of thumb being, it's not illegal unless you get caught.

Generational-Based Roleplay

In this site, the structure allows players to explore not only the modern era but also travel through time to roleplay as parents, grandparents, ancestors, or even future generations of characters. Immortals have the opportunity to play across all eras, interacting with these different generations, thickening their backstories with real events played out and connections established.

Reincarnation

Reincarnation is an optional feature on the site for those who wish to explore it. It follows a metaphysical understanding similar to beliefs in our real world: a reincarnated individual has no memory of their past lives and may not retain the same profession, interests, or even full personality. Additionally, they can be reborn into any country, family, or lifestyle, which means they may have a completely different appearance. However, if they are gifted in magic, they will follow the same path, as it is tied to their soul. There is no set timeframe for reincarnations-they can occur a few years apart or span hundreds or even thousands of years, as many times as fits your narrative.

Magic Rebirths

There are several ways a mortal might find themselves living a new life. For example, the rare and lost Phoenix Spell grants individuals the ability to be reborn from their ashes when they die. In this case, they return as a baby, retaining the exact same physical traits and characteristics as in their previous life, though without any memories. They are raised in entirely new circumstances and age as normal. This is a more controlled form of reincarnation, as there is no gap in time between rebirths.

Soulmates

In Of Providence, we discard the notion that everyone has just "one soulmate." Instead, we embrace the concept of a "soul family"-a group of people commonly reincarnated together. Meeting a member of this group often brings a sense of predestination or deep knowing. This soul family can range from a small circle to an expansive network and does not need to be defined explicitly in roleplay. Characters may feel either platonic or romantic connections with members of their soul family, as these relationships transcend age and gender. Over centuries, new members can be adopted into a soul family through shared experiences on Earth.

Immortals, too, belong to soul families and may encounter, if not be drawn to, these individuals repeatedly across generations without recognizing the cosmic forces at play. In this universe, Vampyres are not considered soulless and fully participate in these events. Daemons who know the "song of the universe" may recognize their soul family-originally tied to their host-though this bond often shifts during their first hundred years of life.

Religion, Spirituality & Magic

Of Providence as an AU does not adhere to any singular religious construct as being false, the truth or in any way superior for the balance of the system. Instead, the universe adopts a spiritual but not religious perspective, postulating that every religion contains fragments of truth, each attempting to tell the same story through different cultural lenses. These narratives may have been influenced by early supernatural forces that are established as general characters of each religious story in which names are more like a "title" that could be applied to any that fits the construct.

For example, prayer is seen as equivalent to meditation, as both calm the mind, focus intention, and draw power. Thus, highly religious individuals may unintentionally produce magic, which they might mistake for the power of their deity. Similarly, old-world rituals, incantations, and herbalism can yield magical effects. In this way, all religions are "right," even if they misunderstand the forces at work.

The pantheon of gods, angels, demons, creatures, entities, and prophets in history often draws from supernatural influences. Daemons in ancient eras were mistaken for gods, worshiped, or even slain by mortals. Some became pharaohs, chieftains, religious leaders, perceived as angels and demons, or other prominent figures in cultural history. Likewise, Vampyres, Witches, Warlocks, Daemon descendants or even particular humans have played significant roles in shaping human history. Despite their power and wisdom, these beings are not true gods. This does not mean that certain entities do not perceive themselves as gods or such entities. However, greater supernatural forces exist behind the physical world, deliberately left ambiguous, beyond a universal source.

All characters are welcome to research, question, or create their own narratives about what they believe to be true. However, like reality, no one will truly know.

Population of the AU & London

In the AU, there are two types of people. The first are the majority of the population-ordinary individuals living their everyday lives, perceiving the supernatural as mere fiction, folklore, and myth. Historically, those who discovered the truth were often frightened or repelled by religious beliefs. However, since the 1880s, societal attitudes have shifted. In contemporary times, the population has grown more curious, desensitized, and even thrilled by the idea of the supernatural, largely thanks to media and cultural fascination. Despite this, most people see only what they want to see. The abnormal blends into the ordinary, often rationalized or dismissed due to the strong conviction that the supernatural is not real.

The second type of people are those fully aware of what lies beyond the veil. These individuals know about Witches, Warlocks, Vampyres, and Daemon kind. They are familiar with organizations, the Council that governs the supernatural world, the territories of covens and clans, specialized schooling systems, mentors, and where to find supernatural resources. Typically, these individuals are supernaturals themselves, raised within these hidden communities, or humans who developed supernatural abilities and were incorporated into the networks. Additionally, there are humans who have encountered the supernatural but remain partially aware, and even human organizations dedicated to studying or eradicating supernatural beings, continuing a long historical trend.

Supernatural beings of all species account for approximately 0.006% of the world population, which equates to roughly 500,000 individuals globally. This population is predominantly made up of Witches, Warlocks, and Daemon descendants. Pure Daemons are incredibly rare, with only about 100 remaining worldwide, most in hiding, even from the Council, and considered an endangered species. Overall, the numbers of supernatural beings have decreased dramatically since the ancient era due to Humans, and have continued to steadily decline over the centuries.

In England there is approximately 57,000 supernatural to the 57.7 million of regular population. In London it is about 9,750 supernaturals to the 9.75 million residents. This population includes both children, working adults and the elderly. Thus, the London population is estimated to be:

  • Ordinary Human Population: ~9,749,500
    • Making up the majority of the overall population by a landslide.
  • Witches & Warlocks: ~250
    • This population may or may not belong to a coven. There are only a handfull of Covens in London, some very small and others larger.
  • Daemon Descendants: ~150
    • This includes individuals exhibiting active traits and those with recessive traits. Daemon descendants may live normal human lives or integrate into Witch/Warlock communities.
  • Vampyres: ~100
    • The Vampyre population is organized roughly into 3-5 regional city clans, with estimated 25-50 unaffiliated Vampyres living in the city or passing through.
  • Pure Daemons: ~1
    • Pure Daemons are exceedingly rare, statistically. Due to the rareness, most would believe they will never encounter 1, let alone more in the city. This however does not mean there are not more.

These populations should not limit your character builds, but give you an understanding of what is expected or considered normal for your character and others interacting with them. If you want to build a clan or coven, consider weaving your character with others to play in the same clan when possible if it fits within the narratives.
