Enlightenment and Modernization (1600–2000 CE)
The Enlightenment (17th–18th century) championed science and reason, further diminishing belief in the supernatural and pushing witches, vampyres, and daemons deeper into hiding. Secret societies like the Freemasons and Rosicrucians allowed subtle supernatural influence to persist through myths and spiritual exploration. The Industrial Revolution (18th–19th century) brought technological progress and urbanization, creating new challenges as human populations grew and global connections deepened. The 19th century saw an occult revival and spiritualist movements, rekindling human fascination with the unseen, but also increasing the risk of exposure. By the 1800s, the Council, originally formed in the 1500s, had gained significant influence and was viewed as a dominating government for the supernatural world, enforcing strict rules and ensuring their secrecy and peace between species. In the 20th century, world wars, mass communication, and scientific advancements made secrecy a matter of survival, with the Council maintaining control in an increasingly skeptical and interconnected world.
